Hardcover. Condition: Very good-. First Edition. Octavo, 369pp., illustrated. About very good in the publisher's tan buckram with blue buckram spine. Spine gilt dulled, notable ding to the top of the rear board, else a clean, square copy, lacking the uncommon dust jacket. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Merrild on the front free endpaper to a previous owner with a six-line quotation from D. H. Lawrence, a primary subject of this book. More wonderfully, Merrild (a painter by trade) has painted a portrait of Lawrence on the following leaf, entitled it "D. H. L.," and signed his name at the bottom. We note no signed copies which have anything like this sort of drawing in commerce. A delightful copy.
