First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Maud & Miska Petersham (illustrator). 1st Edition. Children of the Mountain Eagle by Elizabeth Cleveland Miller, Illustrations by Maud & Miska Petersham, was published by Doubleday, Page & Co., Garden City, New York, in 1927. Not an ex-library copy, this approximately 5 1/2" X 7 7/8", 328-page, 86-year-old, First Edition offering is in G condition. There is some fairly noticeable shelf wear at top edge of spine and much less so at the four outer tips of front and back cover boards. The text's pages show some yellowing, and there is the signature, in pencil, of a previous owner roughly two inches down from the top edge of front loose end page. Some spotty, random webbing is seen between pages 82-83 and 258-259. The center seams have been clear-taped to secure/stabilize same. This is a novel, set in and around a small village in, I'm thinking, turn-of-the-last-century Albania. The author either had ancestors originally from Albania, or was able to learn on her own or from native Albanians, much knowledge and insight about day-to-day village/small town life in Albania, not to mention details as to the history, beliefs, traditions, customs, even children's games, for that is really what this charming and engrossing story encompasses. The main characters are Bor(the seven-year-old daughter of Gjok and Dani), Skander(Bor's newborn, infant brother), Marash(a little shepherd boy about the same age as Bor), and Palok(Marash's father). The number of characters introduced into the narrative as the pages add up is fairly remarkable, Reader. The story just grabs hold of you, although it's not full of danger or suspense or great mystery--it is just a beautifully rendered tale of simple people living their lives as best they can, dealing with problems as they arise, and having fun as often as the opportunity presents itself. SPECIAL NOTE: There are 3 color Drawings, and 4 in black and white, scattered throughout this offering which add immense delight to this book, all the work of Maud and Miska Petersham. The color Drawings, in particular, beginning with the volume's Frontispiece, are rendered in rich, bold colors, while the black and white pictures resemble, somewhat, woodcut engravings, but, at the same time, display a more delicate appearance. They are, in my opinion, something to see and experience. The title, I discerned, has to do with the heartfelt belief of the Albanian people that, from birth, all children are descended from the black mountain eagle, and therefore necessarily possess that formidable predator's most impressive traits--courage, swiftness, bravery. Also included are a Contents Page and List of Illustrations. This is, I sometimes have to say, simply a really nice offering. Thanks!!.

Library Cloth. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Maud & Miska Petersham (illustrator). Assume 1st. Very nice copy in sturdy library rebinding. Clean. Poket intact in front, date sheet removed from FFEP. Name of library neatly obscured. One hopes that stories such as this will continue to be printed but it seems iffy. Folk life from long ago and far away is so precious in the 21st century.
