Bound in 3/4 burgundy cloth Beautiful aquatint costume-book of the Netherlands with short explanatory text in English and French. 30 pp. + 24 acquatint hand-coloured prints of Dutch costume, out of 30 called for. 37 x 26.5 cm. The date of publication on most of the drawings is January 1st 1817: on the titlepage, and on drawings 4 and 7, March 1st 1817. The engraved titlepage incorporates a coloured vignette of five figures in a coastal scene, including a fisherman with his nets, a gentleman conversing with a lady, and a square-rigged boat. The engraver is W Bartlett. A page then notes "The following Drawings, being correct representations of the Costumes of the Netherlands, (each subject having been sketched from Nature) may be found interesting at this time when British valour has made that part of the continent familiar to the Public." Miss Semple seems to have known the country and its inhabitants, and seems to have had little trouble in getting them to pose for her. Her brief descriptions of the illustrations are a joy, full of wit and acute observation and understanding, and are given in English and French. In a contemporary dark-green leather binding with six panelled spine with raised bands, and very extensive gilt decorative detailing to boards and spine. Internally dusty, with some spotting and light fingering to foreedge of plates. Henry Manley's copy, with the name written neatly on the titlepage, and the date 1824. The six plates that have been removed are numbers 12, 14, 16, 17, 25, and 28.
In-folio. 31pp + 29 plates (1 missing). Red morocco half-binding, signed Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London. Very beautifull aquatint plates, hand-coloured, after drawings from stature by Miss Semple. 1 plate missing. Text in English and French. Very good copy.

Book First Edition
Full-Leather. Condition: Very Good. Miss Semple, W Bartlett (illustrator). 1st Edition. A very good copy in later full morocco binding with 30 hand coloured plates and accompanying text by Miss Semple. Dated from the publisher's note at the base of each plate - there is no date on the title page. The text provides a commentary to the plates and gives a sense of her journey around the Netherlands and how the plates came to be drawn. The full red morocco binding is probably late 20th century and mimics the design of the original publisher's cloth binding with a leather and gilt title label to the front board. The endpapers were replaced at the same time and have a tape reinforcement at the joints, which looks contemporary with the rebinding. The binding is in very good clean condition with some bumping to the top corners. Contents: half title with small ink signature to top; decorative title page with hand coloured vignette; and alternating text pages and full page plates. The text is in English and French. The half title has lost its top corner tip and has some small ink marks at the bottom. Plates and text and generally very clean and in very good condition. There is toning to page edges and the occasional light mark. The final plate is beginning to detach from the binding at the top and has some light nibbling to the edges.
