Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo. Unpaged [120p.] Illustrated and decorated by Elsie A. Harrison. The colophon reads as follows (in part): Here ends the Social Rubaiyat of a Bud, a plain, unvarnished tale, unfolded by Mrs. Ambrose Madison Willis, and brought to publication by those not unworthy craftsmen, Paul Elder & Company . And this book was imprinted under the skillful direction of John Bernhardt Swart. And the pictures therein and the embellishments thereof are the handiwork of Elsie A. Harrison, of the City of London .? Frontispiece color illustration in green, lavender, white and black plus 6 other full-page plates in the same colors throughout. Each page has a green and lavender border and a gilt decorated initial letter. Stiff heavy cardstock lapping wrappers printed in black on the front wrapper and with a vignette in green, black and white of a very stylish woman in a long dress signed E.A.H. Just a few minor dings around the edges, spine ever so lightly rubbed, lower corners of wrappers very lightly bumped, all illustrations in fine condition, pages uncut throughout (which was intended by the bookmaker), cover illustration in fine condition, else fine with no internal markings. Ella Maud Bagley Willis was born in New Orleans in 1862 and died in San Francisco in 1955. I could find no other writings by her nor any additional information about her. This parody of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam wittily describes the choices facing a young woman during the social season, as told by a worldly-wise matron. Her counsel is to consider well the prospect of marriage, for ?Myself, when younger, heard great Argument | About Love in a Cottage, but my bent | Is rather for the Golf-Stick than the Broom; | Oh, the Sad Grind of a Domestic Saint!? (XLI) With absolutely stunning and charming Art Deco color lithographs heightened with gold of Edwardian ladies by Elsie A. Harrison. This book is an extraordinary example of fine cooperation between writer, illustrator and printer?a truly remarkable book and rather unexpected to involve these two women at this time in our culture!.
