Hardcover. Condition: g. First edition. 4to. (6),(8),(738),(2)pp. Brown calf skin, with embossed title and decorative design on spine. All edges red. Complete scholarly edition of the Hebrew Old Testament (TaNaKh), edited by Professor Heinrich Opitz. Opitz' exhaustive treatment of the text, "worked on for many years and diligently collated, complete with Masoretic notes. Most accurately emended and recensioned with reference to Or Thorah, Schaar Hanneginoth, as well as principal Hebrew commentaries." The text uses a completely reset block letter typeface that differs from the better known editions of Joseph Athias and Johannes Leusden. Opening text in Latin, beginning with 8 pages of dedication to "Deo Trinuni, Patri, Filio, et Spiritus," 4 pages expounding on "Serenissimos Principes," and then continues with a preface, in which Opitz explains his method and cites his numerous sources, mostly Hebrew and Aramaic, but occasionally Greek as well. Bible text in Hebrew, with Latin apparatus to aid Christian scholars. Index of Haftarot (additional weekly readings from Prophets) at end. Illustrated half-title page, with a full-page copper plate engraving around descriptive text. The engraving depicts the light of God shining over a Temple interior and the Ark of the Covenant inside the Holy of Holies at the bottom, and a crown resting on top of the Latin inscription: "Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum." Followed by complete descriptive title page. Several woodcut Latin initials, as well as decorative designs engraved throughout the text. Text in Hebrew and Latin.
