V E R Y R A R E The Christian conversion & early travels of Jenichiro Oyabe to Russia, China, the South Seas, & his learning experiences whiee in America for some 9 years. The authors states the reason of writing this book ws to warn the young people of the "dangers arising from the effect of the wonderful progr- ess of this country in the development of machinery.& the power of money." This work is also in reply to Americans inquiry as to the reason why the author left Japan, and of his wandering throughout the world. The author "struggled for some nine years abroad in persuit of higher education." This early autobiography entirely in English covers the aut- hor's departure from Japan via Yezo on to America, sent back to Japan, on to Russia, Liukiu Islands, to China, to America & studied in New Haven at Yale University. A very fascinat- ing record of his associations with famous American mission- aries & educators of the late 19th century. Valuable source.

First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Octavo. 219pp. Frontispiece portrait and inserted plates. Maroon cloth gilt. Front hinge neatly restored, puncture hole in front gutter, very good. Inscribed: "From the Author to the Hawaiian Board of Missions. 99 Nassau Street, New York City, June 16th, 1898." One of the first accounts of life in America by any Japanese-born traveler. Oyabe was a missionary to the Ainu people in Japan and, inspired by American missionaries, he decided to travel in the U.S. where he was, not unpredictably, discriminated against. He went on to study as a "special student" at two traditionally black schools: Hampton Institute and Howard University, where he got his D.D. degree, and finally went on to study at the Yale Divinity School, where he gives an account of playing the newly invented game of basketball. He then went on to do missionary work in Hawaii, and eventually returned to Japan, where he did further missionary work, and wrote on Japanese nationalist subjects. An uncommon and important book, seldom found signed.
