First Edition
First edition. First edition. 8vo. 7" x 9 3/4" color pictorial wrappers, 16 pp., double column, illustrated. Contains six attractive 7" x 9 3/4" full-page chromo-lithograph drawings of horse-drawn Buckeye farm equipment. A picture of the manufacturing plant in Springfield is provided. The company manufactures Buckeye broad-cast seeders, sunbeam cultivators, spring tooth cultivators, hay rakes, cider mills, etc. Pictured is the "Senior Latest Improved Buckeye Cider Mill and Press." A "Junior" model is also manufactured but with only half the capacity of the "Senior" model and is much smaller in size. Phineas P. Mast arrived in Springfield in 1856 from Urbana, Ohio, forming the Buckeye Agriculture Works, one of the mammoth manufacturing establishments in the United States. The original proprietors were Phineas Mast and John Thomas, a young lawyer. Together they invested and manufactured the Buckeye Grain Drill, Buckeye Cultivator and the Buckeye Cider Mill. Thomas withdrew from the firm and his interest passed to the hands of Mast, and the P.P. Mast Company was on its way. Mast radically improved his machines to make them the best made and most useful machines that ingenuity could devise. The machines were constructed from wood, iron and steel by cunning and efficient workmen. The company grew from year to year until it became one of the greatest mechanical and manufacturing enterprises of the time. A tiny chip at the bottom fore-edge of the front panel, else a near fine, clean, attractive copy.
