The Treaty of Temecula, also known as California Treaty K, was one of 18 unratified treaties between the United States and California tribes. The Treaty of Temecula was signed on January 5, 1852, between the United States government and the Cahuilla, Cupeno, Luiseno, and Serrano peoples. The treaty was never ratified by the United States Senate, and the Native people were never given their reservation. Instead, they were forced to live on small parcels of land or were pushed off their land altogether. Horace Parker's book, The Treaty of Temecula, is a brief history of the treaty and its aftermath. Parker describes the negotiations that led to the treaty, the reasons why it was never ratified, and the impact that the treaty had on the Native people of Temecula. Includes a facsimile reproduction of the treaty, 1852, A Critique of the commemorative Program and Plaque presented in 1950; A discussion of the Vischer Sketch of 1865 entitled "Indian Village Temecula". [From page 3] The unratified Treaty of Temecula in 1852 between the Indians and the United States Government is one of the better known Indian treaties in Southern California. However, it is poorly understood by Indians and non-Indians alike, as to its significance, background and the exact spot where the treaty was signed. If it had not been such a deadly serious document to the Indians who signed it in good faith it would carry the overtones of a comic opera with an appropriate theme song of 'promise 'em anything but give 'em nothin'.".
