First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 8vo. Pp. 128. Frontis. port. Illustrated with two early photos, one of Seattle, one of Steilacoom, both looking at the small towns from the water. Bound in rust cloth with lettering stamped in black on front cover. Spine a tad worn, front hinge starting, as usual, but quite firm. Inscribed by Prosch: "To Mr. & Mrs. S. D. Crockett. A token of the esteem of [signed] Chas. Prosch" Crockett was a Seattle civic and business leader, serving as an owner of Hall and Paulson Furniture Company. That business was a total loss in the 1889 Seattle fire; Crockett, with partners, then formed the Seattle Security Company to develop real estate. In 1885 he served a term on the Seattle City Council; we assume Crockett Street, on Queen Anne Hill's south-slope gold coast, was named for him.Prosch was first a newspaperman, arriving Steilacoom 1858 where he founded the Territory's second newspaper. Later he migrated north to Seattle, where he became a leading citizen. Of the reasons to enjoy Prosch, humor is paramount. For an early Puget Sound civic leader, he lacks the crankiness and self-righteousness of most ancient pioneers, who require adoration for simply having shown up before others. HOWES, P633.
