A first edition in English and Hebrew of this work from acclaimed Israeli artist Zee'v Raban (1890-1970), illustrating the biblical book Song of Songs. The book was produced at the famous Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem were Raban taught and worked, and displays his noted and evocative style combining art nouveau and orientalist elements. The work is comprised of a total of 26 tipped-in reproductions after color images by Raban showing scenes from the biblical text, all finely accented in gold and silver and mounted on heavy stock paper. The images are all protected with tissue guards, each stamped with the published illustrated device. The facing pages of each plate contain the biblical text In English, printed in brown, with detailed and elaborate decorative borders, and hand-colored accents. A beautiful copy of a gorgeous work from one of the pioneering figures of Israeli art. Binding with some light rubbing to extremities. A few pages throughout contain minor damp stains, and/or smudges, mostly in the margins. A few light chips to the edge of the front endpaper. Images throughout clean and bright.
