Il cosiddetto boom del fumetto ha costituito un fenomeno curioso e non ancora chiarito, perché presenta almeno tre facce diverse. Da un lato c'è stato l'interesse, da parte di studiosi a livello universitario, verso il fumetto in quanto fenomeno tipico di una società industriale dominata dalle comunicazioni di massa: studi sul fumetto venivano compiuti già da vari anni, ma si sono intensificati in questo quinquennio e sono venuti a conoscenza del pubblico piú vasto solo di recente. A questo rinnovato fervore di ricerca (scientifi camente autorizzato) si è accompagnato ed è difficile stabilire i rapporti di causa ad effetto un piú spregiudicato atteggiamento del pubblico adulto verso una forma di comunicazione grafica che veniva seguita ma solo in segreto: e sono incominciate cosí le riedizioni dei fumetti americani anteguerra, le riesumazioni dei personaggi ormai mitici su cui ogni quarantenne oggi compie una modesta, ma non meno affasci nante, ricerca del tempo perduto. Accanto, si è verificato il terzo fenomeno: una irresponsabile ondata di curiosità e di speculazione commerciale, culminata nella produzione dei fumetti dell'orrore e in atteggiamenti pubblicistici assai deprecabili, che hanno fatto di ogni erba un fascio, esaltando o biasimando il fumetto in sé come se si trattasse di un fenomeno omogeneo. Attualmente negli Stati Uniti l'ondata di popolarità dei supereroi (Superman, Batman, ecc.), che invadono le trasmissioni televisive, i supermarcket e i negozi di giocattoli, ha acuito la perplessità di tutti e la confusione di molti. Sociologia del fumetto americano reagisce con una serie di pacate riflessioni e di studi rigorosi sulle comic strips d'oltre oceano. Vi collaborano sociologi e critici, vi si allineano indagini statistiche, analisi di contenuto, riflessioni di storia della cultura. Ne emerge una panoramica rigorosa e consapevole, una serie di accuse ben precise, una sequenza di apprezzamenti sempre ragionati e motivati. Sino dai lontani anni venti Gilbert Seldes, con Seven Lively Arts, aveva dato inizio allo studio del fumetto come fenomeno artistico e sociologico di grande rilievo: lo studio del fumetto non è quindi il risultato di una moda passeggera, si radica in una tradizione ormai a livello accademico, che ha dato frutti degni di nota. Ricerche come l'analisi di contenuto compiuta da Lyle W. Shannon sull'ideologia reazionaria di Little Orphan Annie o la ricerca statistica di Francis E. Barcus su Il mondo dei fumetti domenicali (per citare solo due tra gli eccellenti saggi di questo volume) non costituiscono solo un contributo al discorso sul fumetto, ma un documento e uno strumento di ricerca per il discorso più ampio sulla civiltà di massa e sulla cultura popolare in una società industriale.
