Plate margins show wear, some brown-spotting, small tears; a few text leaves show unrepaired tears (p. 131-132), with a few that have been actually stitched with thread (pp. 101-102); two early, pencilled women's names are present on the reverse of the plates at p. 256: Miss Taxell 23 William St Hernbay Nr Canterbury, and at p. 266: Mrs. Mayhew 38 Museum St Hernbay. Bound in full, old mottled calf, with red leather spine label, gilt-lettered: Dr SYNTAX'S Second TOUR, with gilt line bands across the spine. The outer hinges show some cracking, bumping and wear to the cover corners with the leather worn off, wear and rubbing to cover edges, cover surfaces. The endpapers, show tape repairs, wear. Some pages show tears, age-related tanning, or small stains. This is a completely unrestored copy.

Frontispiece, Illustrated title page, letterpress title, ii, ii, 285, [1, blank], [1, "Advertisement"], [1, blank]pp. Twenty-six hand-coloured aquatint plates (including the frontispiece and engraved title). Bound later for H Sotheran and Co. with their stamp to the reverse of the front free endpaper, in full red morocco, with gilt page edges and marbled end papers. Spine repaired and replaced, attached to the original boards, with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt to the compartments. Approximately 9 ½ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition new spine attached to old boards, gilt titles, five raised bands, six compartments. Joints good condition repaired, sound, rubbed and worn. Corners good condition gently bumped and worn. Boards good condition full red calf leather, with gilt edges, minor marks and scratches. Page edges good condition top edge darkened, all edges gilt. Printed title-pages are undated. Three Volumes, each being 6 ½ in. x 10 1/8 in. Vol. I: Frontispiece; engraved, colored title-page. Printed title-page, advertisement with advertisement to ninth edition; directions for plates leaf. [8] pp., pp. [1]-276; with 31 colored plates, including frontispiece & title-page. Vol. II: frontispiece; printed title-page with advertisement to third edition on reverse, introduction; directions for plates leaf. [6] pp., [1]-277; 24 colored plates including frontispiece. Vol. III: frontispiece; colored engraved title-page. Printed title-page, preface, directions for plates leaf. [6] pp., [1]-279; with 25 colored plates, including the frontispiece and title. Wood engraved designs: 1: p. 276; 2: p. 51; 3: p. 279. These later plates vary slightly as to size and coloring. Some offsetting of plates onto the facing text pages. Uniformly bound in original red-brown cloth with gilt titling and designs on the spines, blind-stamped designs on the covers, light yellow endpapers; top-edges gilt. Covers show some light wear, small stains; inner hinges starting. An earlier bookseller has added this in pencil, on the front paste-down of the first volume: "Early copy. Excellent impression of the plates Original Covers." Some pages, plates show light tan spotting. Scarce, early decorated cloth-bound set of the later editions. Weight: 5 lbs.
