First Edition
Hardback. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Charles Livingston Bull (illustrator). First Edition. Scoville, Samuel, Jr. Lords of the Wild. New York: William Morrow and Company, 1928. First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-10] 1-246. Original teal decorative cloth, front and spine panels stamped in ivory-white. Illustrated by Charles Livingston Bull with four inserted plates and pictorial endpapers. Small rubber stamps of previous owner on top and bottom edge of text block, as well as in pencil on the front fixed endpaper (this pencil mark blends in with the gray of the endpaper background unless held at just the right angle); otherwise a fine copy, with stamping as sharp as a coin. The book is unaccountably scarce. #908. $25. The thirteen stories of animal life are bogged down by sentiment and too many adjectives, falling far short of the standard set around the turn of the century by C. G. D. Roberts. The book is worthwhile, however, for the illustrations by Bull, one of the premier animal painters of his day.

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Charles Livingston Bull (illustrator). 2nd Edition. Scoville, Samuel, Jr. Man and Beast. New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1932. Second edition. Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v [vi] 3-284 [note: text complete despite initial gap in pagination] [note: title page is a cancel]. Original orange cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, fore-edge untrimmed. Illustrated with eight inserted plates by Charles Livingston Bull, and with pictorial endpapers. First published in 1926 by Harcourt Brace, the present edition has the same page count as the first; it's probable that this edition was made up from unsold copies of the Harcourt edition with an inserted cancel title page bearing the name of the new publisher and then rebound. Both editions are now uncommon. Damp staining to part of rear cover with faint continuation of dampness to lower corner of last dozen or so leaves, otherwise a nice copy with unopened pages in a good pictorial dust jacket, damp stained in same area and a bit soiled on front panel. #950. $35. Thirteen animal stories portraying the dramas of predator and prey. Ten are set in South Africa, two in America, one in Malay.
