A Very Good copy. A reprinted article that first appeared in the New Mexico Review, July 1935. A concise history about the first ten years of the Mexican Inquisition in the region of New Spain that would later become New Mexico. Author France V. Scholes provides an overview of the Inquisition in New Mexico, its causes, and local figures on both sides of the Inquisition. This pamphlet generally references the period of c. 1600-1630s. Scholes brief describes the political climate of New Mexico at the time, the tensions between Spanish Catholicism and secularism, and the role of the Holy Office. He names specific people such as Juan de Onate, Alonso de Benavides, Juan de Eulate, Esteban de Perea, and Felipe Sotelo Osorio. The latter section of the pamphlet references specific cases of men and women who were accused of sorcery or witchcraft. The Mexican Inquisition was an offshoot of the Spanish Inquisition. The Inquisition in New Spain formally began in 1571 and lasted until 1820 when it was abolished by decree for the last time (it had been abolished in 1812 but made a brief return).
