Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Signed and inscribed on the title page by the author to Eloise Armen. The book is dedicated to Ms. Armen, who had a long friendship with Eva Le Gallienne, and who was her literary executor. The inscription reads: 'For lovely Eloise----who made it all possible----Love + thanks-- Helen.' There are 33 page references to Ms. Armen in the biography. Nevertheless, as you can see in the photos, she took very good care of the book. The covers are perfectly clean and free of wear. All six edges and four corners look terrific. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The page edges are very clean. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. There are no binding issues. The pages are also exceptionally clean and in excellent condition. Scrolling through, I'm not seeing any soiling. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket is in very good condition as well. It is very clean. There are no tears. There is a tiny bit of crinkling around the top edge of the spine. The flaps are also very clean. There is a crease at both the top and bottom corner of the front flap and one at the top corner of the rear flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket front flap: 'The extraordinary life of one of the great actors of the twentieth-century theater-- her dazzling and influential work on the stage as actor and director, her controversial (and courageous) private life, her pioneering role as founder and head of the Civic Repertory Theatre, and her importance as translator of Ibsen and Chekhov. Using Le Gallienne's diaries, letters, and notes, and interviewing more than 150 of her friends, lovers, acquaintances, and family, Helen Sheehy has brought this complex artist brilliantly alive. Her book is a revelation of the actors life and work.' "A splendid, compelling biography. A rich testament to the life of a remarkable woman and a remarkable force in the history of American theater."--- San Francisco Chronicle. "An enthralling story"--- Boston Globe. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. Stated First Edition. First Printing. Biography of Eleonora Duse, the exceptional Italian theatre artist who was the muse for Checkov, Ibsen, Rilke and others. Eleonora Giulia Amalia Duse (1858 1924), often known simply as Duse, was an Italian actress, rated by many as the greatest of her time. She performed in many countries, notably in the plays of Gabriele d'Annunzio and Henrik Ibsen. Duse achieved a unique power of conviction and verity on the stage through intense absorption in the character, "eliminating the self" as she put it, and letting the qualities emerge from within, not imposed through artifice. . Both the volume and the unclipped dust jacket are in perfect, pristine condition; unread, unmarked, tight, square, and clean. AS NEW/AS NEW. Photographs. Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall. xv, 380 pp.
