Story orig. published in book form in 1871, this is the FIRST EDITION with these illustrations from 1919 (First, thus), in 342 pages. With putty-colored cloth over boards, lettered in darker putty to spine, blue to front, along with a colorful paper pastedown by Smith, this hardcover small 4to (7.25" x 9.75") is in Good+/VG- condition: very clean, stitched text block secure, but front hinge cracked & repaired with clear tape by a previous owner. Pages creamy white with modest tanning to edge. Plates have clean white borders, strong colors. Old gift inscription, partially whited-out, inside front cover; else, pages all unmarked. Rubbing to extremities, bumped corners. Some edgewear to front pastedown. No DJ. A lovely edition for the plates alone! With soft green cloth over boards, lettered in dark blue to front & spine, with a colorful front paper pastedown by Smith (which shows slight rubbing, a few spots & edgewear). Hardcover small 4to (7" x 9.25") is in VG-/Good+ condition: very clean with the occasional spot or smudge inside. Former owner's name, gift inscription, & another owner's address label to front endpapers; else completely unmarked. The stitched text block secure & both hinges are intact. Externally, this is rubbing to extremities, heaviest along spine & all corners, with some cloth loss & fraying. Both front & rear boards show stains: a red paint swipe to lower edge of front, white spotting to rear. but front hinge cracked & repaired with clear tape by a previous owner.
