Rear cover has early rubberstamp of Massachusetts music store ("Fred W. Peabody, Pianos."). Staples oxidized, else a near fine copy, with the covers and text fresh and bright. A charming publication, nicely printed and illustrated. Unrecorded by OCLC, which does note two holdings of a similar title by Smythe, *When Toyland Wakes* (1913)]. Smythe was also the author of *Children's Circus* and *When Toyland Wakes!* both of which were similar in format to *Play Time,* published as promotional pieces for music stores in 1912 and 1913. A collection of brief poems written to encourage children and parents to play the piano, each page contains a four-line poem promoting the playing of piano in the home and at school.

This title, a copy of a 1447 ordinance governing the exchequer, would have been "essential" for local government officials and justices of the peace given that most "were obliged to render an account at the Exchequer of fines, fees, and amercements" (Holdsworth). Copies of the 1447 ordinance were frequently issued with or incorporated into JP manuals of the period. The ESTC notes that this title may have been issued with editions of The Boke for a Justyce of Peace (London, 1546). It is rare.
