Very slight rubbing to jacket, slight wear at corners. The Mixtecs of Oaxaca, Mexico as they lived before the 1520s when the Spaniards first entered their lands, and as they continued to exist under Spanish rule until 1600. The Europeans would not tolerate certain aspects of Mixtec culture such as human sacrifice, cannibalism and adultery but encouraged others such as the general organization of society, patterns of settlement and the political order. Rule by a hereditary royal caste continued and the role of native leaders who dominated the political and social life of the Mixteca Alta in the 16th century is thoroughly explored including what it meant to be a Mixtec ruler before and after the Spanish Conquest.
