Condition: Very good. - Small octavo [6-3/4 inches high by 4-3/4 inches wide] softcover bound in decorative tan wraps printed in French fold. The top corners of the wraps are very lightly bumped & there is a small stain to the front wrap with an ink address and phone number on the rear wrap. [15] pages plus colophon. Very good. First edition.Inscribed by the author and signed in full on the inside front wrap. The address on the rear wrap was possibly written by the recipient.The colophon states: "These 'Ephemerae' have been selected from many, written over a long period of years, for this gift book."The poet Edward Steese (d.1981) was also an architect who was involved in the preservation of New York City's historic and architectural landmarks in the 1950's and 60's. In addition to several volumes of poetry, Steese compiled the book "New York Landmarks 1957" listing and documenting the city's architecturally historic buildings.

This book, simply titled "Poems by Neilson Abeel" was published by Princeton University Press in 1951 in a limited edition of 150 copies. This is Copy No. 133, so inked on the limitation page (see picture provided above). The handsome portrait of Mr. Abeel, used as the frontispiece, was painted in 1925 by Edward Steese, who also compiled and edited the book. Beneath the portrait is a facsimile of Neilson Abeel's signature . The book includes a number of poems about Princeton. Mr. Steese, as well as being a poet and architect, is esteemed for his efforts to preserve historic architecture of New York City. ************************************************** On the front flyleaf is a gift inscription to "Mrs. Havens" signed by "Stachy Abeel". Stachy could have been a diminutive of Stacy or Stacie.
