Bel frontespizio figurato, inciso da M. Greuter, ritratto di Persio al verso di Carta 5, e 6 belle tavole nel testo incise in rame, con fregi e iniziali ornate. Legatura in pergamena settecentesca un poco tarlata al dorso e ai piatti, titolo oro su tassello applicato al dorso. Arrossature sparse dovute alla carta dell'epoca e qualche macchia, altrimenti buon esemplare. Edizione originale, rara e pregiata, di notevole interesse letterario, contenente il testo delle 6 satire di Persio con la "Stimatissima" traduzione e le ampie ed intelligenti note dell'autore; ma è soprattutto noto per il suo eccezionale interesse scientifico. Interessante è la bella tavola a pag. 36 raffigurante una lince; ma l'interesse degli studiosi si sofferma sulla grande tavola a pag. 52 (api) e su quella a pag. 127 (gorgoglione), che costituiscono il primo esempio di applicazione del microscopio alla storia naturale. Gli insetti sono raffigurati ingranditi (specialmente alcuni particolari del corpo dell'ape); e le descrizioni che accompagnavano le tavv. furono definite "il primo esempio di anatomia degli insetti". Nelle note si parla anche delle scoperte di Galileo e del Della Porta, e di molti altri argomenti interessanti. Pare essere questo il primo libro stampato in cui compaia la parola "microscopio", coniata pochi anni prima dai Lincei per uno strumento ideato da Galileo. Vinciana, 1766. Graesse V, 215. Lievi arrossature sparse, ottimo esemplare. Pergamena settecentesca, piatti maculati, dorso con filetti e titoli in oro (tarletti al dso). Un timbro, un ex libris ms. e uno applicato. Edizione originale di grande importanza scientifica: la traduzione delle sei satire di Persio ha un notevole fascino letterario, ma è soprattutto avvincente per la descrizione degli insetti osservati al microscopio (ingrandita cinque volte è la tavola delle api). Costituisce la prima applicazione del microscopio alla storia naturale, accelerando le ricerche in campo biologico, mondo completamente inesplorato. Sono presenti nell?opera numerosi riferimenti a Galileo, di cui l?A., naturalista e letterato di Fabriano, tra i fondatori dell?Accademia dei Lincei, era grande ammiratore. Gamba, 2053. C.B.L., 675.
