Upon his son's wedding day, Mr Herbert Holly - a mild and inoffensive dentist - has an exotic lady client fling her garter at him, tore her dress, then accused him of assault. He is arrested, but alluding police, disguises himself as a maiden lady. so effective is his disguise that his his son's employer becomes violently enamoured. and well, one can imagine what happnes from there! Written in novel form, this was produced as a play.

Contemporary full dark blue crushed morocco with gilt border and authorÕs facsimile signature in gilt on upper cover, spine lettered gilt, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt bound by Zaehnsdorf, London. The title page includes two further titles Chances by Walter Lindsay and An Evening on Dartmoor by Noel Munro which are not present, presumably all three were originally published together. A flyer for the play (including a small portrait of the author) loosely inserted. Vernon Sylvaine (1896-1957) was a playwright and screenwriter who began working in film in 1937. He is usually associated with farce, however in this prize-winning play which was performed in various regional locations at the time he deals with the aftermath of war and its effects. An exquisite binding. Fine. Fine.

Humorous novel of Mr. Herbert Holly, a mild and inoffensive little dentist, visited by an exotic lady client who inexplicably flung her garter at him, tore her dress and accused him of assault. He was promptly arrested but, eluding the Police, he hid in his son's apartments - disguised as a maiden lady. His disguise was so effective that his son's employer became violently enamored, and he had a busy time repelling hearty advances. The play Aren't Men Beasts with Robertson hare in the part of the unhappy Mr. Holly, had a highly successful run at the Strand Theatre'. Very Good in Very Good dustjacket, some chipping at spine ends and flap corners, some short closed tears and signs of wear.
