First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First edition. First edition. Thick 8vo in navy blue cloth lettered in gilt. x+ 694 pp. All pages of the text bordered in red. A tight, bright, fine example. Laid in is a short typed note dated at Newark, N.J. October 14th, 1894 and signed "Yours truly/ Thos. Dunn English'. Thomas Dunn English (1819-1902) was Philadelphia native who spent most of his life in neighboring southern New Jersey. In addition to being an author, poet and songwriter, he was a U.S. Congressman 1891-95. His most famous piece was "Ben Bolt" (1843) that was published in the New York Mirror. English was a friend of Edgar Allan Poe but broke with him over a scandal concerning Frances Sargent Osgood and Elizabeth Ellet. Skeptical of Poe's side of the story, the two engaged in a fistfight; thereafter, Poe attacked English's work in print and English responded in kind (one of English's published pieces resulted in a successful libel suit against him by Poe).
