Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Signed and Inscribed by the author 'to Anne + Max Geismar with gratitude and to our friendship, Marguerite Tjader, Darien, Conn., Sept. 26, 1965.' Max Geismar, who has written extensively of Theodore Dreiser, is referenced on the front flap of the jacket (read below). As you can see from the photos, the blue covers are exceptionally clean, and there is very little wear, a little crinkling at the spine ends, nothing much more than that. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages are nicely tight throughout. There are no binding issues. There is spotting/foxing on both inside covers and end papers, including the front one with the signed inscription. However, it is gone after that, no foxing/spotting to be found anywhere else in the book. The pages are exceptionally clean. I'm scrolling through slowly without seeing any instances of soiling. It's obviously possible I could miss something, but it doesn't look like it. The pages are also in very good condition. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing or dogeared corners. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket is in very good condition. It's very clean. The green on the front is a somewhat different hue than that on the spine so it's possible that one or the other has been sun lightened or darkened. There is some smooth rubbing on the front, some light scuffing at the spine ends. The flaps are in very good condition. They do have a little bit of foxing/spotting. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It is protected by a fitted cover. From the dust jacket: 'The literary revolution begun by Theodore Dreiser with the publication, in 1901, of "Sister Carrie" still reverberates today. Critics and biographers are attempting to reassess his impact on the literature of his day and his meaning as a man. They are by no means unanimous. Maxwell Geismar, perhaps the most noted Dreiser authority, considers him a titan of American literature, second only to Herman Melville. Others dismiss his work as that of a fanatic, heavy and given to an oversimplified mechanistic view of life.' 'Marguerite Tjader was born Nov. 24, 1901 in New York City, the daughter of Richard Tjader, a big game hunter, explorer, and evangelist, and Margaret (Thorne) Tjader, daughter of the financier Samuel Thorne. She attended Bryn Mawr College and Columbia University, where she received the A.B. degree in 1925. Her marriage to Overton Harris ended in divorce in 1933. Their son, Hilary (1929-1999), became a documentary filmmaker, receiving an Oscar in 1962 for his direction of 'Seaward the great ships'. From 1937 until 1945 Mrs. Harris edited 'Direction, the left-wing journal of the arts she founded with the support of Theodore Dreiser. She had met Dreiser at a dinner party in 1928 and their intimate relationship continued off and on until 1944 when he finally married Helen Patges Richardson, his companion of almost 30 years. In 1944 Mrs. Harris and her son moved to Los Angeles where she became one in a long succession of Dreiser editorial assistants. In addition to typing and editing drafts of his work she acted as a sort of 'spiritual advisor' to Dreiser while he completed his penultimate novel 'The Bulwark', published posthumously in 1946. Marguerite Tjader Harris is probably the model for the title character of 'Lucia', one of the fictional sketches in Dreiser's ''A Gallery of Women', published in 1929. During the 1930's, presumably after the dissolution of her marriage, Mrs. Harris, who had been raised a Baptist, converted to Roman Catholicism. In the 1950's she helped Mother Elisabeth Hesselblad establish the U.S. foundation of of the Order of the Most Holy Saviour of Saint Bridget (Bridgettines) by donating Vikingsborg, her family's summer home in Darien, Conn., to the order. Inscribed by Author(s).
