Traduction de l'italien par l'abbé Péton de la première édition italienne de 1755. Reliure en plein veau brun glacé et marbré. Dos à nerfs orné. Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge. Coiffe de tête arasée. Mors fendus en tête et queue. Coins émoussés. Le père Della-Torre observa les éruptions du Vésuve de 1751 et 1754 et fit maints voyages pour affiner ses observations, aussi prit-il la décision de composer cet ouvrage en s'aidant de tout ce qui avait été écrit sur le domaine depuis l'Antiquité. L'ouvrage contient une biobliographie de tous les auteurs ayant écrit sur le volcan. Par ailleurs, l'auteur ne s'en tient pas à décrire les différentes éruptions et les caractéristiques du volcan, mais il cherche à percer le mystère et les lois physiques de la terre. Le traducteur français a ajouté diverses pièces intéressantes à l'ouvrage de Della-Torre, notamment une dissertation critique par le père Amato, et les dernières observations de l'auteur, dans le but de composer le meilleur ouvrage critique qui ait paru sur le sujet.
