Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust jacket condition: None (as issued). Limited edition of 500 copies. Solid retired library book with usual library markings; else VG. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. From the Foreword: I am pleased to have a part in restoring this account to public view. Long out-of-print and growing scarce on the Confederate bookshelf, it will fill a void on the mounted arm of the Confederacy. In the pages that follow, you will be introduced to, or reintroduced, to the South Carolina Cavalry of 1861-65. Much has been written about the bold cavaliers who led the cavalry during those memorable years. Stuart's Raid, Brandy Station, Trevillian's Station, and the encounters of Gettysburg became "the" cavalry battles. One must also search for Hawe's Shop, Riddle's Shop, Old Church, Deep Bottom, or Vaughn Road. You will search longer for accounts of the Iron Scouts, or tales of the exhausted troopers and jaded mounts who dashed about the field and endured the rigors of sustained combat. Matthew C. Butler, from Captain of the Edgefield Hussars to Major General, Commanding Division, from Manassas to the surrender of Johnston's Army, was eye witness to the service and campaigns of the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia. Badly wounded at Brandy Station, he would recuperate in his native state. When he returned to Virginia in the spring of '64, it would be at the head of a fresh brigade of much needed cavalry: the 4th, 5th, and 6th South Carolina. The cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia, new and old, would pay a terrible price during Grant's campaign of attrition.
