Van Osdel (b. 1845) served as President of the Sixth Session of Dakota Territory (1866-1867), as a member of the House (1874-1875 and 1881-1885), on the Territory Council in 1889 (the year that North & South Dakota were granted statehood), ran for Governor of South Dakota as an Independent in 1892 and lost to the Republican candidate, &c.

This very scarce work is generally thought to have been printed in Yankton, South Dakota in 1914 or 1915. This copy has a 1" x 1" label affixed to lower corner of rear pastedown which reads: E.B. McIntyre, Book Bindery, Yankton, South Dakota. An interesting compilation of narratives, this obscure work presents a history of early events in the Dakota Territory with much on early exploration, Native Indians, and the fur trade. A fine copy. This is the first copy we have seen with an original, gilt-stamped leather spine. Presentation binding??.
