Hardcover. 4to. Burgundy textured paper over boards with embossed white spine lettering and embossed white front board portrait, pictorial dust jacket. 171pp, (5pp). Frontispiece, numerous illustrations (many color). Near fine/very good. Jacket lightly age toned, with blank spine titled in blue ballpoint (seemingly in author Wearin's hand?). Quite tight and really handsome first edition of this study, limited to 750 copies numbered (this #301) and signed boldly in full in blue ballpoint by Wearin. In addition to the blank jacket spine apparently inked by Wearin, he seems to have also circled the "4" (of "1964") on the title page and penned "1" alongside, correcting this incorrect year of death for Ellsworth. Wearin (1903-90) was the youngest member of Congress when elected from Iowa in 1932 and the youngest of FDR's "New Deal" Congress, serving until 1939 when he lost a senate race; he turned to ranching and writing, eventually being elected to the Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1985.
