Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. First Printing. 1st pbk. printing. (Originally published in London in 1931 by Hutchinson. In the US as: "The Silver Scale Mystery", Lippincott, 1931). Part of the British Library Classic Crime Series with introduction by Martin Edwards. Reading crease else as new. Locked Room mystery, Adey #1998. "Duchlan Castle is a gloomy place in the Scottish Highlands. Late one night the body of Mary Gregor, sister of the laird, is found in the castle. She has been stabbed to death in her locked bedroom. The only tiny clue to the culprit is a silver fish's scale, left on the floor next to Mary's body. Inspector Dundas is dispatched to investigate. The Gregor family and their servants are quick to explain that Mary was a kind and charitable woman, but Dundas uncovers a more complex truth. Soon further deaths occur. Superstitious locals believe that fish creatures from the nearby waters are responsible, but luckily for Inspector Dundas, gifted amateur sleuth Eustace Hailey is on the scene, and unravels a more logical solution to this most fiendish of plots. Anthony Wynne wrote some of the best locked-room mysteries from the Golden Age of British crime fiction. This cunningly plotted novel -- one of Wynne's finest-- has never been reprinted since 1931". -- back cover". Book.

Octavo, white & brown cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, viii + 371 pp. Very Good, with bookplates; in a Good+, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear. From dust jacket: In 1877, the United States was in flames from a financial panic and a national railroad strike. The cities of Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Philadelphia burned as police and soldiers battled with railway workers. In Scranton, striking railroad workers induced the iron workers and miners to join them. Scranton became paralized by the threatening situation. Voices of sanity in this tinderbox were those of Owen Roderick and Rhondda Hall. Owen was the son of a migrant Welsh family and a young survivor of the Avondale breaker fire. Rhondda had arrived in the anthracite region as a seventeen-year-old Quaker, induced indirectly by Asa Packer to teach the children of coal miners. Owen and Rhondda's commitment to nonviolence was challenged in the national and local struggles of 1877. The lives of Owen Roderick and those of his parents and Rhondda Hall, the dedicated Friend, parallel the growth of the anthracite region from the post-Civil War era to the next century. As residents of Hyde Park, a Welsh enclave in Scranton, their personal lives are reminiscent of those of thousands of immigrants of every nationality who came to northeastern Pennsylvania to mine coal. Octavo, softbound (stiff, photo. illus. blue wrappers), 160 pp. Fine. From lower cover: Less than two decades after joining the Union, Florida became the third state to secede and join the newly formed Confederate States of America in 1861. After the firing on Fort Sumter the Florida peninsula became a battleground for both sides, a haven for deserters and Unionists, as well as a crucial source of supplies like salt and beef cattle. Union naval forces strove to strangle the state's wartime economy by seizing blockade-runners while Federal soldiers, who held much of northeastern Florida, played havoc on the civilian population. Under such pressures Floridians fought their own civil war against the blue-clad invaders and against Union sympathizers and Confederate renegades. Although the smallest in terms of population, Florida sent over 15,000 men to the Confederate army, and Florida regiments served in both the eastern and western theaters of war. They gave valiant service in battles from Shiloh and Chickamauga to Antietam and Gettysburg. Such fighting decimated the ranks of Florida units and caused anguish for those left behind at home. These home front Floridians -- women, slaves, Seminoles, and Hispanics -- shouldered the heavy burdens of keeping families together and supplied with food. Their story of silent heroism and contributions to the rebel war effort are too often overlooked. And while the names of such Florida figures as John Milton, Pleasants W. White, Jacob Summerlin, or J.J. Dickison seldom appear in larger histories of the war, it was because of their efforts that Tallahassee was the only state capital est of the Mississippi River to escape Union occupation during the course of the war. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, American History, Americana, U.S.-iana, Civil War, War between the States. yslic.
