Original-Kupferstich von Antoine Joseph Gaitte (in der Platte signiert) nach einem Gemälde von Claude Jacquand auf rückseitig unbedrucktem Karton, Blattgröße etwa 26 x 17,5 cm, bis knapp an den Plattenrand beschnitten und von alter Hand geschmackvoll koloriert, sehr gut erhalten, von großer Seltenheit und für uns anderenorts antiquarisch nicht nachweisbar Abbe Armand Jean Le Bouthilier de Rance (1626-1700), französischer Adeliger, Mönch, Domherr von Notre Dame und Abt von fünf Klöstern, darunter La Trappe, wandte sich nach dem Tod seiner Geliebten, der Herzogin von Montbazon, vom zügellosen höfischen Leben ab, spendete sein gesamtes Vermögen kirchlichen Klöstern und wurde zu einem der großen (bis heute umstrittenen) Reformer des Zisterzienser-Ordens und forderte vor allem Demut, Askese und harte körperliche Arbeit in der Landwirtschaft. Er wurde nie heilig gesprochen und ist bis heute umstritten wegen des hohen Krankenstands und der hohen Sterblichkeit der Zisterzienser-Mönche unter seinem asketischen Regime. Antoine Joseph Gaitte (1753-1835) war ein Kupferstecher der französischen Schule, der vor allem durch seine architektonischen Stiche und einige Porträtarbeiten bekannt wurde und auch im Museum des Louvre vertreten ist. Claude Jacquand (1803-1878) war ein französischer Maler von historischen Szenen, religiösen Motiven und Porträts, der in allen großen Museen Frankreichs zu finden ist. 2100 gr.

L'abbé de Rancé avait cherché à redonner à son abbaye de la Trappe l'esprit de la première règle de Saint Benoît et celle des premiers cisterciens : une vie monastique austère, silencieuse et dépouillée, où les travaux manuels et la prière étaient les seules occupations.
