Seller: Victoria Bookshop, BERE ALSTON, DEVON, United Kingdom
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First. 8vo. this is an ex-library copy- it has the associated stamps, and marks from where the date slip has been removed from the ffep, also old prices written on, and crossed off the ffep. The library had also taped the dustjacket (laminated) to the paste downs, this tape is still present but has yellowed, and transfered a long yellow slightly tacky mark to the ffep, which is also visible on the other side, at the rear of the book, the free end page has stuck to the tape, obscuring the paste down and fold over, again with resultant mark visible through the paper. That said all other pages are clean and unmarked, except for slight discolouration to the top edge. Illustrated through out in black & white. The dust jacket is present and complete and has been largely protected by the plastic covering to which there is some surface wear, however along the bottom edge of the front cover the plastic has crazd resulting in maze of small cracks and some rubbing, this extends about .75cm upwards. a library serial number has been stuck on the bottom of the spine. Book.
First Edition; Cr. 4to; pp. 192; portrait frontispiece, text illustrated with numerous b/w. photographs, dramatis personae, the Souls' circle, bibliography, index, bound in original black cloth, title lettered in gilt on spine, dustjacket, fine copy.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. English Society at the turn of the century has a legendary glamour, but no group within it had the distinction, brilliance and allure of the close-linked coterie dubbed the 'Souls. This circle of friends included a Tory Prime Minister, A.J. Balfour, the wife of a Liberal Prime Minister, Margot Asquith; and Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India. The women 'Souls' were renowned for their spirited charm as much as for their spectacular beauty. In contrast to the opulent style of the Marlborough House Set, the Souls were serious and studious, sharing mutual interests in literature and art. Violet, Duchess of Rutland, was herself a notable artist, while other members of the group were patrons of the Pre-Raphaelites and encouraged and participated in many Arts and Crafts activities. Their famous country house week-end parties attracted much sought-after guests, such as Henry James, Oscar Wilde, Max Beerbohm, John Sargent and Mrs Patrick Campbell-all of whom could be described as 'occasional Souls. Both authors collaborated over an exhibition on The Souls, held at The Bury Street Gallery in St James's, London. ---------- Orders over $100.00 are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
