[published as #4 in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Heritage Series]. Octavo, pictorial wrappers, 32 pages, stapled, illustrated (reproducing black-and-white photographs of African-American women doctors). Text prints one-page biographies of 26 noted African-American women in medicine, including Dr. Joycelyn Elders, who at the time was Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine, where she received her Doctorate of Medicine. She went on to be appointed United States Surgeon General, in 1993, by President Clinton, making her the first African-American Surgeon General, and only the second woman to hold the position.
