First Edition
Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Bookplate. Measuring 4½" x 5¾". Designed and strikingly illustrated by Winold Reiss. Small chip in margin of the upper right corner, else near fine. A gifted portraitist, German-born Winold Reiss challenged the convention of racial stereotyping by portraying African-Americans, Native Americans, and Asian American subjects as dignified individuals. Having viewed a 1925 exhibition of his portraits at the 135th Street Library in Harlem in 1925, Locke was so profoundly moved by Reiss's portraits, that Locke commissioned Reiss to provide the portraits of famous African-Americans for Locke's landmark 1925 book, *The New Negro.* Dr. Locke, the "Dean" of the Harlem Renaissance, called Reiss a "folklorist of the brush and palette, seeking always the folk character back of the individual, the psychology behind the physiognomy." Rare. *OCLC* locates no copies.
