First Edition
First edition, 1/1000 copies. 8vo. 370 pp. Four maps. Croghan (c. 1720-1782), a native of Ireland, emigrated to the colonies in 1741, establishing a home on the Pennsylvania frontier and eventually becoming "[one of] the most prominent English Indian agents of his time. His journals and correspondence constitute one of the chief sources for the history of the West from 1745-1775 and his career epitomizes it. He was one of the first Englishmen to foresee the future greatness of the wilderness beyond the Appalachians" (DAB). Croghan established a number of trading posts in the Ohio Valley before the French & Indian War, playing a large role in that conflict, and becoming a great land holder in New York and western Pennsylvania during the years leading up to the revolution, an event that ruined his business, plunging him into poverty. Howes V-141a. Clark & Brunet 262: "[Croghan's] journals and correspondence constitute one of the chief sources for the history of the West from 1745-1775." Very good. Original navy cloth, gilt spine title (spine ends and corners rubbed), top edge gilt, others untrimmed. (#5886).
