Both editions have been printed as follows: "Three Thousand Eight Hundred Cloth-Bound Copies - Three Thousand in French and Eight Hundred in English - In a Paper Covered Slipcase". - The Finest Collection in the World, Of all the important collections of furniture exhibited in Paris or Versailles, in New York or other capital cities, that of the Louvre is indisputably the richest and most admired. Since inheriting the French Royal Collections, it has been enriched regularly by the addition of objects commensurate with its prestigious origins, in accordance with a very selective acquisitions policy. This furniture is the expression of an art in which in the past, and especially in the 18th century, French influence reigned supreme. Indeed, the best foreign craftsmen came to Paris to participate in the creation of masterpieces. Throughout that century, successive styles demonstrated the capacity for invention and renewal which is typical of French genius. The art of furniture-making was one element in an art de vivre which was then at its highest point. Previously unpublished: This collection has never before been the subject of such an important work. Its publication has required contributions from qualified art historians and compilation of a large quantity of very high quality illustrations. The work was conceived - and for the most part written - by the keepers of the Department des Objects D'art responsible for the furniture section of the Louvre Museum. It is dived into two volumes. Volume I includes a brief history of the collection and, for each period or style, an analysis of the furniture made by ebenistes (cabinet-makers), each style is presented in a separate chapter centred around the most representative craftsman - Boulle, Crescent, B.V.R.B., Oeben, Riesener, Martin Carlin. Volume II is devoted to 17th and 18th century furniture made by by menuisiers (joiners) - mainly seats. It has taken a whole year to prepare the illustrations. The photographs were taken with great skill under the most appropriate conditions. Nearly 200 masterpiece are presented, each with an overall view and with photographs of details, all of extremely high technical and artistic quality. The publisher's aim has been to provide a complete and exact image of this incomparable collection in a de luxe edition which does justice to its splendour. This publication won the Marc de Beauvau Craon Prize 1993. These incredible books are truly a work of art, just like the subject itself.
