Condition: Very Good. 6 modest pages on a single 19 x 23 cm. sheet folded to make 4 pages with the final 2 pages on a added half sheet which is somewhat ragged along left side. Clear and readable. No punctuation. Two horizontal folds for mailing. Original envelope present -- standard 3 cent postage stamp and Feb. 1 Cairo, Illinois postmark on upper right; patriotic blue and red image of a blue-coated Union soldier standing in front of a cannon and a tent flying the Stars and Stripes occupies the left portion of the front of the envelope. A recent transcription is included. We were intrigued by much of the letter, including the following about Ulysses S. Grant: "Thare is as used to be a Grist and saw mills Gen. Grant by some means asertained that they was furnishing flour for the Sesesh and timber for their gunboats and he gave leaf to burn them In less than 10 minutes thare was 2,000 men all around them They were set on fire and excitement was so great that before they could be stoped three dwelling houses were set on fire and burned." Delano was a private serving with the 28th Regiment, Illinois Infantry.
