C'est lors de son séjour au Canada, en pleine guerre, en 1944, qu'André Breton écrit Arcane 17. Dans le tarot des bohémiens, l'arcane 17 est l'Étoile, symbole d'espérance, de liberté et d'amour. Mais c'est aussi Elisa, la compagne du poète, sa seule inspiratrice. C'est à elle qu'il dédie ce récit de rêve. Le manuscrit d'Arcane 17, l'un de trésors de la Bibliothèque littéraire Jacques-Doucet, est publié ici pour la première fois. Le texte, bien connu, est écrit à la main par Breton dans un «cahier de grande école buissonnière» de 48 pages. La partie illustration, elle, est totalement inédite. Les collages, les photos, les objets trouvés sont annotés par André Breton et constituent la clef pour comprendre Arcane 17. Notre édition contient également la transcription précise du manuscrit ainsi que le texte complet d'Arcane 17.
