Good Friends Bring Salad is a raw and comical account of one woman's journey from obesity to self-fulfillment.Anita Campbell's life changed dramatically in her teen years when she found herself the target for teenage cruelty about her weight. Good Friends Bring Salad is the diary of that teenager ten years on. The name-calling has not been forgotten, and the weight has continued to stack on. During the journey she encounters many temptations and realises that a lot of her bad eating habits stem from her emotions. She digs deeper and finds that she, among many others, has an eating disorder. The next step involves the realistic setting of goals and the coming to terms with the reality of food addiction. That is, that hot chips and chocolate biscuits are bad for you!The book also includes facts and figures relating to weight loss and the health problems associated with obesity. Comparisons are made between foods and some of the more common marketing scams are exposed. Anita's diary is witty and entertaining, full of useful and achievable tips for the food-addicted, and is written in a manner that can be enjoyed by all, even men! Hardcover. Condition: new. Samantha Campbell (illustrator). Hardcover. Powerful and moving, Bidhi Galing (Big Rain) celebrates the Wiradyuri heroes of the Great Flood of Gundagai in 1852, told through the eyes of a young girl who is rescued from the raging floodwaters by her father. Wagadhaany grew up near the Marrambidya Bila. She loved dancing in the rain and listening to her father, Yarri, tell her stories about life on Wiradyuri ngurambang. When white people started building on the floodplains, Yarri was worried. He knew the power of the bila and tried to warn the strangers, but they would not listen. Years later, the big rains came . This is the story of the Great Flood of Gundagai in 1852 and the Wiradyuri heroes, Yarri and Jacky Jacky, who paddled bark canoes through raging floodwaters, risking their lives to save countless others. Anita Heisss powerful text, accompanied by Samantha Campbells evocative illustrations, is a gift of Wiradyuri culture, knowledge and language, sharing a resonant message for our times. Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. x+404 pages with illustrations, maps, bibliography, appendices and index. Small quarto (10" x 7") issued in original dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria blind stamped in gilt on cover. Edited by Herbert K Beals, R J Campbell, Ann Savours and Anita McConnell, Roy Bridges. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society, Third Series, Number 18. First edition. This volume offers annotated text with biographical and historical introductions of four previously unpublished travel journals from the period 1775-1874. The first of these is the journal of a participant in a Spanish expedition sent from Mexico to explore the north-west coast of America. From the outset, difficulties plagued the voyage. Bodega's ship, a small schooner named Sonorawas not designed for open-ocean voyaging. A landing party was attacked and killed; midway into the voyage, the Sonora became separated from her flagship, and later she was nearly capsized by a massive wave, Bodega's journal records the voyage's travails, hardships, discoveries and eventual return. Next is the journal of Commander Stokes, who served in command of HMS Beagle, under Captain P P King during the survey of the Straits of Magellan in 1827. This is an account of a detached operation, in very difficult weather conditions, in the western part of the strait. It is introduced by remarks on the expedition and the hydrographic history of the strait from its discovery to the inception of the survey and supplemented by remarks from Captain King's account and also that of the clerk, Macdouall. The third text is the journal of a young midshipman in HMS Cantiicleer, a small vessel commanded by Henry Foster, RN, who had recently been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for his scientific work in the Arctic. The voyage of 1828-31 was to make observation in the South Atlantic to determine the shape of the Earth and to ascertain the longitudes of a number of ports. Kay's lively diary describes the Chanticleer's encounters with warships of the Brazilian navy, largely manned by Englishmen. He records his struggle to take observations at Deception Island during gales and snowstorms, and near Cape Horn in fierce squalls and constant chilling rain, nevertheless remaining cheerful in the company of his fellow midshipmen. The final piece is the diary of Jacob Wainwright, the young African freed slave who carved the inscription on the tree beneath which David Livingstone's heart was buried, covering his journey back to the coast with his body. This remarkable record throws important light on the conditions in East Africa in the 1870s as well as on the story of Livingstone and the ultimately tragic life of Wainwright himself. Now published for the first time in English, it also throws some odd lights on Victorian missionary and publishing activities. Condition: A fine copy in like jacket.
