Hardcover. 2nd. Black cloth boards with gold embossed lettering on spine, blue and white illustrated dust jacket with white lettering; 104 pp., bw illustrations. "Here is the first American study of the religious arts of the remote, barren, and enigmatic country of Tibet. In Tibet, art is essentially religious. It is a means of giving concrete expression to the metaphysical concepts of 'The Religion' - Lamasism. The first two chapters, therefore, are devoted to Buddhism and its development into Lamaism, showing the importance of the many deities and divinities in Tibetan art. Following chapters dsecribe the works of art themselves. These works of art, in a variety of art forms - temple paintings, images, books, wood blocks, votive tablets, ritual objects, robes, masks, metal work, musical instruments, jewelry, butter sculpture, sand diagrams, and caligraphy - are illustrated and described in detail, with explanations of the methods and materials used. Some of the illustrations in this profusely and beautifully illustrated book are from hitherto inaccessible collections. Several rare and dated temple paintings are included, one of which is published here for the first time. There are also translations, made by the author from original Tibetan texts, that show the type of invocation used in the ritual. Restricted by rigid canonical rules, Tibetan art nevertheless shows a great variety of expression, form, and mood, which runs the gamut from the serene calm of a contemplative Buddha to the ferocity of a belligerent Defender of the Faith. Images and paintings are made with consummate craftsmanship and a fine feeling for line, color, and perspective." - dust jacket description. G+/G- (book has previous owner's nameplate on front page, with some age toning along textblock, all pages clear and intact - dust jacket has some rubbing, shelf wear and some small tears at spine and corners, still protective).
