Book First Edition
Cloth. Condition: Good-only. FIRST EDITION, NANCY ASTOR's COPY. 8vo, pp. [1-4], 7-368 (as usual). Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Spine cocked, cloth splitting at upper joint, rubbed, large stain to front board. "Nancy Astor" in brown ink to ffep, some foxing, esp. endpapers. Else, clean and tight. Good-only A well-handled copy of the journalist-farmer's anthology, with Nancy Astor's name inscribed to ffep, but without a Cliveden Library shelf label. Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor (1879-1964) was an American-born British politician and the first woman to sit in British parliament, serving as Unionist MP for Plymouth Sutton from 1919 t o 1945. From the year of publication 1936 onwards, Astor's reputation suffered "irretrievable damage" due to journalist Claud Cockburn's attacks on the 'Cliveden set' (ODNB). Adrian Bell's anthology, through which he "tried to catch some glint of the genius of the country in an oblique, perhaps the only way", opens with Thomas Hardy and juxtaposes Wordsworth and Thomas Bewick, Gertrude Jekyll and Mrs Gaskell, D. H. Lawrence and Gerard Manly Hopkins, as well as Thoreau and Proust, amongst others. He thanked Mrs Q. D. Leavis for "all her help". Bell (1901-1980), a Suffolk-based farmer, was a significant contributor to rural or 'land literature,' and is perhaps best known for his trilogy of novels Corduroy, Silver Ley & The Cherry Tree (1930-32), and being the first Times crossword compiler. Astor and Bell don't appear to have known each other personally.

NANCY ASTOR (1879-1964). Astor was the first woman to sit in the British Parliament. She was elected to the House of Commons in December 1919. She served in Parliament for over a quarter century and was known for her wit and her feud with Winston Churchill. TLS. 1pg. 8" x 10 ½". July 27, 1920. London. A typed letter signed "Nancy Astor" with a postscript "How well I remember those day at dear Grandma Agassiz". She wrote to Mrs. Cornelius Felton on Boston: "It was indeed kind of you to write to me on May 23td, and I deeply appreciate your letter. It is such letters as yours that comfort and encourage me in what are often very difficult days. Though I greatly appreciate the privilege of being the first woman to enter Parliament in England, it has certainly entailed many sacrifices, the greatest of which is having to be away so much from my children!" The letter has mailing folds and the original envelope is included.

unbound. 1 page, 10.25 x 8.25 inches, St. James Square, London, November 9, 1927. Written to Mrs. Harcourt Williams, wife of the beloved stage actor and director, declining an invitation, in full: "It is so kind of all of you to want me to come on December 15th, but, alas, I am afraid I cannot possibly manage it; I only wish I could. I am, however, finding it increasingly difficult to make arrangements outside my own constituency (which I feel has the first claim on any time I can spare from my work here in London - there is so much to be done). I appreciate so much your kind offer of hospitality, and am sorry not to be able to avail myself of it. With many more thanks, [adding last word in holograph] & regards." Natural folds and a small crease, but still in very good condition. Accompanied by a 6 x 4-inch (plus borders) black-and-white image of Astor, taken from a book, perfect for framing. American-born English socialite best remembered for becoming the first woman to sit as a member of Parliament in the House of Commons. Her feud with Prime Minister Winston Churchill is still considered legendary.
Nancy Witcher Astor (1879-1964) was born in Danville, Virginia, but moved to England with her husband Waldorf Astor at the age of twenty-six. In 1919, Nancy Astor became the first woman in the United Kingdom to take her seat as a Member of Parliament. The materials in the present item chronicle AstorÕs successful campaign in the general election of 1935 and offer context into the social and political climate of the United Kingdom at the time. Many of the campaign materials included here are targeted towards women, especially mothers, and portray Astor as a hero for educational reform (pp. [20-21]) and a Òchampion of the nurseryÓ (p. [16]). The materials also offer insight into the Conservative PartyÕs rhetoric against socialism, especially in regard to economic improvement since the Conservative Party regained control of the House of Commons from the Labor Party in 1931. One flyer reads: ÒThe Socialist PartyÕs policy means dumping, depression, disaster,Ó (p. [8]). Overall, this scrapbook is a fascinating perspective on the public face of Nancy Astor and contemporary attitudes toward her and her campaign. Quarto (6 inches by 7 inches). [ 180 ] pp. Newspaper clippings, posters, and other campaign promotional items laid in or pasted down on the first [90] pp., except for on a few blank pages. The remaining pages of the scrapbook are blank. Some of the items are in color and many of the newspaper clippings include photographs. Also with a separate photograph (3Ó by 4 Ó) of Nancy Astor on a dock laid in between pages 2 and 3.
