This legend has been used by such diverse artists as Wagner, Swinburne, and William Morris, but never with the elegance and vivacity brought to it by Beardsley. With the same precise attention to detail and startling originality which inform his celebrated drawings, Beardsley has written a glittering parody on the old legend. The elaborate, artificial style; the words set as jewels within graceful sentences which themselves glide into paragraphs and chapters; the obvious desire to shock ~ in a genteel, delicate manner~with pointed references to the bizarre sexual practices which so fascinated his contemporaries: these things are perfect illustrations of the Decadence of which Beardsley was a prime figure. This edition of the book, as John Glassco says in his Introduction, is "an attempt to vindicate Beardsley's genius as a man of letters and an exponent of pure form." Mr. Glassco has completed Under the Hill, achieving a remarkable feat in his imitation of Beardsley's language and rhythms, and more importantly, in his exquisite realization of the author's plan. Mr. Glassco has carefully collated three earlier texts, and all the drawings especially composed for the book by the artist are included. It was Arthur Symons in his book on Beardsley who said that he "would rather have been a great writer than a great artist," and who goes on to say, of Under the Hill, that "it has felicities that astonish, those felicities by which the amateur astonishes the craftsman." In this first complete American edition of Beardsley's great romance, the reader can catch the fleeting yet unmistakable perfume of that brief phenomenon we call the English Decadence.
