The first is Young's account of the first of several tours observing agriculture and rural social conditions Arthur Young (1741 тт " 1820) was an English agriculturist Not himself successful as a farmer, he built on connections and activities as a publicist a substantial reputation as an expert on agricultural improvement After the French Revolution of 1789, his views on its politics carried weight as an informed observer, and he became an important opponent of British reformers He is considered a major English writer on agriculture, although he is best known as a social and political observer Also read widely were his Tour in Ireland (1780) and Travels in France (1792) First edition, half-title, woodcut illustrations, contemporary ink inscription "Jo Woodgate's Library" to front pastedown and later inscription to front free endpaper, contemporary calf, a little worn, with some cracking and peeling at ends of spine and moderate staining on endpapers [PMM 214], 284 pp.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Small, 154 x 95mm, ii, 253 p. Modern quarter brown paper and blue boards with paper label on backstrip simulating original boards. Lacks half-title, but with the final blank leaf, "James Thompson, Moyle May 1842" on second front blank, variable brown water staining on top of pages from 1.5 inches deep fading to 0.25 inches at the end, leaf 72/73 has tiny ink spots, 0.25 inch worm track at top of pages 61 to 68 not affecting text, otherwise a very good copy with the seven text woodcuts of agricultural implements of the first London edition. This Dublin edition was published in the same year as the London first and is very scarce, more so than the London first, one copy found on WorldCat several on COPAC. Better than it sounds!! Title continues: Describing, Particularly, I. The Present State of Agriculture and Manufactures. II. The different Methods of cultivating the Soil. III. The Success attending some late Experiments on various Grasses, &c. IV. The various Prices of Labour and Provisions. V.
