Summary:The garden of the British Embassy in Rome is traversed by a stretch of some 400 yards of a Roman aqueduct of the first century A.D. This being an Ancient Monument on British territory, its consolidation and repair were considered in 1957 by the then Minister of Works, now Lord Molson, to be a proper task for the Ancient Monuments division of that ministry, just as the care and maintenance o the embassy itself is the task of another division of the same ministry.

Hardback. Condition: Very Good Plus. J.R. Abercromby (illustrator). Second Edition. No stated date. c.1900. Second edition. xxiv, 286pp., frontispiece portrait of F.W. Bedford and many black and white drawings by J.R. Abercromby. This is a story of George Heriot's School, Edinburgh, based on fact. The author writes in his introduction "To preserve, then, in some degree, a record of a boy's life as it used to be in Heriot's Hospital [School] is the purpose of the following story, in which an effort has been made to put in narrative form the experiences of a Herioter. In many respects his games and pastimes, his industries, even his mischief and his scrapes, were peculiar to the Wark and characteristically Heriotic, and the writer has only taxed his memory and not his imagination in the episodes through which he leads his hero and his companions." The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and gold titling and an illustration of Heriot's on the front board. The case of the book is in excellent condition with some shelf wear on the boards and bumping to the spine ends. There are some small dents on the top edge of both boards and the bottom edge of the rear board. The contents are tight and clean with a few pages having short and neatly written notes and some small black marks on pages 154 and 155. There is slight wrinkling along the top edge of the preliminary pages and page 1. The author has signed the title page thus: "Andrew Jamieson Baillie - Period 1863 to 1870", written on top of the frontispiece " The grandest man I know in this world" and inscribed the front free endpaper "To Professor Alexander Darroch with great respect from the author". SIGNED and INSCRIBED By the Au.
