Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. ## Collins Pocket Guide: To The Sea Shore by John Barrett and C M Yonge 1965. ## ## THIS BOOK: was classified as VERY GOOD. This book is the 1965 edition, first published in 1958 and reprinted in 1960, 1962 and 1965. The spine has the titling in gold and has faded, but it is still very clear. Minor bumping to corner, no foxing that I can see. The book is in good order and gives a wealth of information. ## The chapters are Plant-like, Encrusting, Worm-like, Crustaceans and related animals, other shelled animals and Swimming animals. There are over forty colour plates, forty black and white plates and over 300 line drawings to help you identify what you find. ## ## INTRODUCTION: THIS BOOK has modest aims. It is intended as no more than an introduction for the amateur naturalist, assuming no prior knowledge, to the shore's common and more easily identified animals and plants. Excellent books exist for a student with some technical knowledge of zoology and botany. By the shore, we mean the full extent of that fringe between land and sea uncovered at the lowest tides and covered at the highest. While this represents no great area compared to the land on the one side and the still greater extent of the sea on the other, a remarkable variety of living things inhabits it. Many of these, moreover, are of types never encountered elsewhere. So, when we go to the shore, we enter a new world and, like travellers visiting strange countries, need a guidebook to help us. That is the function of this book, to be supplemented later should the traveller remain for long and need fuller information. ## ## Just as such a guide stresses a country's more obvious and important features, so must this one confine itself to the more obvious animals and plants. Our Victorian ancestors loved to have a name for everything and to make collections of all they found to fill their shell cabinets or books of dried seaweeds. Today we are just as concerned with the general picture of intertidal life as we are with minute details about different species. In any case, almost every group of animals represented, to say nothing, the seaweeds of hundreds. Some plants and animals are large, but the majority are small; something more than the naked eye is very often necessary for their identification. ## ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note.
