First Edition. 226 pp. Illustrated, plates, portraits, maps of course layouts, including St. Andrews; publisher's 32-page catalogue of books, primarily sporting titles, at the end; endpapers printed with adverts. The first volume in a series of 23 volumes published annually through 1910. The first successful annual and a great reference. Includes histories of the Amateur and Open Championships, historical sketches by Horace Hutchinson and John Thomson, a description of St. Andrews by J.O.F. Morris, Willie Park, Jun. Open Champion, many other short pieces and a 100-page directory, with descriptive glimpses of the British golf clubs. This copy in original red cloth with gilt lettering and illustration. The vast majority of the first edition, and all subsequent editions, were bound in green cloth. A small number of the first volume were bound in this red cloth, perhaps as publisher's presentation copies. ½"loss to top of slightly faded spine with one small stain, else covers clean and bright. Bookplate partially removed from pastedown, university library blind stamp on title page, inner hinges reinforced, upper ffep corner torn and remains of paper attached to upper edge. Contents clean and tight. Covers protected in mylar. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Contents complete, including, among others, "The Laws of Golf" by Simpson, "Round the English Golf Links" by Hutchinson, "History of the Golfing Championship, and List of Champions," discussions of St. Andrews, Hoylake, Macrihanish, Prestwick, Westward Ho!, North Berwick and Gullane Links, with appropriate illustrations. Latter part is a Club Directory. Advertising on the endpapers; also 8 pp. of golf ads, followed by a 32 pp. publisher's catalogue following i-[vii] prelims and 226 pp. of text. The first in a series of annuals that continued through 1910, with several editors. Volume I appears to be especially scarce in the red binding; all later volumes and most of this volume are in green bindings., 1888

    Condition: Very good. First edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. Top, bottom, and edges of spine slightly worn. One very small (1/4 inch)dark spot on front cover, but cover lettering bright and unaffected. Former owner's ink signature on the top margin of the title-page. Internally clean and tight. In the less often found red binding, which may have been intended for presentation copies.

Original red cloth boards in good condition despite minor discolouration to the front, gilt titles and small image of a golfer still bright. Spine is lightly faded with slight shelf wear to the top and base although clean with the titles still legible. Yellow endpapers with advertisements to both. Binding tight. Previous owners' neat inscription dated 88 to the verso of the front free endpaper. Pages remarkably clean throughout. pp. vi 226 32 (adverts) Overall a fascinating copy.nbsp; book.
