Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the first UK edition, and simultaneous first edition in English (also published in the US by the Viking Press in 1928). Freely adapted by Stefan Zweig. Translated into English by Ruth Langner. The book was originally published in German by Gustav Kiepenheuer, Potsdam in 1926. ***Near fine in very attractive art-deco vibrant orange, black and grey designed red cloth-covered boards, with black printed paper title label to the spine in fine condition. Boards clean and bright. Spine tight. No inscriptions. ***In a very good pale tan black printed and decorative bordered dustwrapper, that has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's price of 6s net. Very shallow loss to head of spine of dustwrapper. A few light surface marks to front panel of dustwrapper. 204mm x 138mm. 159 pages plus publisher's decorative black and white motif to rear page and complete with spare paper spine title label tipped in to the rear in fine condition. ***'This brilliant adaption of Ben Jonson's comedy has been successfully produced by the Theatre Guild of New York. A note to the text indicates the lines along which Zweig has worked; it says: "to be played as a commedia dell'arte, lightly, quickly, caricatured rather than realistic; allegro con brio."(Quote from inside front of dustwrapper blurb). First impression of the first UK edition and simultaneous first edition in English, rare to find in its original 1920s dustwrapper in such nice collectable condition. Of interest to collectors of Stephan Zweig and 16th Century theatre. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
