Inscribed and dated to Shibley Telhami by author on fep. Shibley Telhami is a Palestinian-American Professor in the Department of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland, Louis René Beres is Emeritus Professor of Political Science and International Law at Purdue University. He was born on August 31, 1945 in Zürich, Switzerland, and earned his Ph.D. at Princeton University in 1971. Louis René Beres has written many books and currently also writes editorials for various major newspapers and magazines. In the United States, Beres has worked on matters of nuclear terrorism with Department of Defense agencies as the Defense Nuclear Agency and the JFK Special Warfare Center; with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency; and with Nuclear Control Institute. Derived from a Publisher's Weekly review: Beres, who has written widely on international power, politics and the atomic threat, here brings together a panel of experts (including Avi Beker, Robert A. Friedlander, Burns H. Weston) who discuss the options, strategies and ethics of Israel's nuclear capability. The writers try to accommodate Israel's two somewhat conflicting goals: that the country be able to defend itself, if need be by use of nuclear arms, and that a nuclear exchange be avoided, since it could easily lead to worldwide disaster. Many facts and arguments are marshaled (40 pages of notes follow the text) and Israel's options have been clarified.
