The author, Hannes Blöndal (Hannes Stephensen Gunnlaugsson Blöndal) (b.1863, d. 1932) was an Icelandic writer who resided in Canada from 1899 to 1907 (18 years), during which time he worked for the Lögberg (Icelandic language) newspaper in Winnipeg and took an active part in the Canadian/Manitoba Icelandic community. Like Einar Hjorleifsson Kvaran, he was active in ethnic and literary life In North America. While the subject matter of this book is primarily related to Iceland, it nevertheless contains considerable text on Canada (two selections set in Winnipeg) and the United States (a selections on the United States (set in San Fransisco). Third edition, augmentged/3. útg., aukin. 228 p./s., [1] mbl.front portrait ; 19 cm./sm. Language: Icelandic. Fine in blue cloth hardcover with blindstamped gilt decorations to front cover and spine. Subjects: Ljóð/Poetry; Íslenskar bókmenntir/Icelandic Literature. Signed on front free endpaper by "J. B. Johnson' (Jonsson), prominent fisherman and businessman of New Iceland (Gimli) area of Manitoba, Canada. See Johnson's bio. Johnson had an interesting relationship. His bio states in part that Johsom and companion three companions went on "a journey to London, England, to deliver 99 sled dogs for Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Trans Antarctic Expedition in 1914. J.B. was asked to come to Antarctica as a dog driver, but he thought he should go back to Canada and his family. He and the other three Canadians with him, were presented with engraved gold watches by Sir Ernest in appreciation of their contribution to the expedition.". Signed. Bookseller Inventory # 39596
