First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Cover design by Bob Masse (illustrator). 1st Edition. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm, vinyl stereo LP record, Warner Bros.-Seven Arts WS 1746 in a "very good" jacket with considerable edge rub. The vinyl of this thrift-shop find is at the low end of what we'll generally list. The scratches can't be felt but there are a goodly number of them, especially to the opening minutes of Side 2, which is entirely occupied by the single 19-minute track "What Love (Suite)." While we'll grade Side One "very good" (still far from near-mint, though the five cuts there play without much noise) we do indeed hear considerable noise to Side 2, and we'll thus grade Side 2 here "good-plus" (since it DOES play through.) We wouldn't list this disc at all save that it's pretty hard to find. As to what this music IS, there seems to have been a tendency to broadly label anything produced by longhairs in the late '60s that didn't sound like The Partridge Family as "Psychedelic Rock." In fact, this Vancouver outfit, mixing in recorders and flute with Bill Henderson's almost classical guitar, seems to have aimed for a Renaissance flavor reminiscent of Fairport Convention. Whereas "What Love" sounds more like something out of the Arabian peninsula, or maybe North Africa. The lads are technically proficient, but perhaps it's not too shocking that this and the followup "Grass and Wild Strawberries" were their only albums until they re-formed. ("Hard to dance to, and I didn't find myself humming the tune.") After vocalist Howie Vickers left the group in 1969, guitarist Henderson took over lede vocals, and the band became the better-received Chilliwack. Reduced from $25.
