First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. India's relations with both Japan and ASEAN have been growing rapidly as a result of New Delhi's "Act-East Policy". The Northeast Indian states are beginning to court foreign investment as seen in the maiden Global Investors' Summit in Guwahati, Assam earlier in February last year. In February 2018, the government of Assam inked an agreement with the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) to construct a 65-storey Twin Towers, in Guwahati, Assam which is being touted as the hub of India's engagement efforts with the ASEAN countries as a part of its "Act-East Policy". At the inauguration of India's longest bridge over the Lohit river in Assam (on the third anniversary of his swearing in as the Prime Minister on May 26, 2017), PM Modi noted that "the eastern and north-eastern parts of the country have the greatest potential for economic development, and this bridge is just one element of the Union Government's vision in this regard." The development of Northeast India will also be in keeping with the present government's strategy of "Neighbourhood First" as Bhutan and Nepal were the first two countries, which PM Modi visited after taking over as the PM. In addition, PM Modi had invited the Heads of State of all the SAARC countries to his inauguration. However, although the total trade between India and ASEAN stood at US$58.4 billion in 2016, Northeast India only accounts for a miniscule portion of it in spite of this geographical contiguity. On the other hand, in another worrying development-India made up only 2.6 per cent of ASEAN's total external trade in 2016. In order to bring up development levels in Northeast India to levels in other parts of the country, cooperation with ASEAN and Japan is sine-qua-non. Only this will ensure that the Northeastern part of India will be able to overcome the tyranny of geography.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Contents: 1. Introduction and Historical Background. 2. Japan-India Relations After the End of the Cold War. 3. Japan-India Maritime Relations. 4. Major Foreign Policy Challenges for India and Japan. 5. The Trust Factor and the Road Ahead. Bibliography. Index. This book seeks to analyze the ongoing flux in the Indo-Pacific region, as India, Japan and China-all seek to grow at the same time. Japan and India have had close historical ties, but these have not translated into robust gains in the economic and political front in the modern times. All this, however, seems to be changing with the growing power and influence of China and the relative decline in American dominance in the region. At the same time, India, under PM Modi and Japan, under PM Abe are actively seeking to establish themselves as leading players, not only in Asia, but globally. India and Japan are both energy-deficient nations and have a deep interest in ensuring that the sea-lines of communication in the Indo-Pacific region are kept open for all. This book elucidates India's usefulness for Japan in the maritime arena as the Indian Navy is the most powerful actor in the Indian Ocean region, with the sole exception of the US. India's growing closeness with the US has also helped to bring New Delhi and Tokyo together. The central argument of this book is that Japan can trust India, in the maritime Indo-Pacific, it is sine qua non that the two countries shed their reticence and take some tough decisions to take the relations on the maritime front to the next level. The book will list some recommendations to take the Japan-India kizuna (Japanese word meaning bond) to the next level. Last, but not the least, it will vouch that in order to ensure a rules-based order in the maritime Indo-Pacific region, India and Japan need to sign a specific maritime cooperation treaty at the earliest. Buch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book analyses the growing relationships among India, the United States and Japan in the Indo-Pacific region, which can broadly be defined as the space encompassing both the Indian and the Pacific Oceans, though different nations have their competing visions of its extent. While on the one hand we have an ascendant China in all respects, at the same time, the US has continued interests in maintaining its leadership role in the region and beyond. Washington appears to employ a hub-and-spoke model where its most important ally in the region, Japan, fits in perfectly as a point from which to connect to the rest of the region. However, the critical role will be that of India, which is not an American ally but is key to many American plans in the region. Will India cooperate By examining the rapidly-evolving relations among the three countries, this book explores India's position in this region. Crucially, this book will analyse how the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic will upset power relations in the region. It is suitable reading for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of international relations, politics, security studies, political science, and geopolitics.
