[a very presentable copy, with no significant wear to book but some uneven age-toning to edges of text block (apparently from variant paper stocks); the jacket shows minor wear to extremities, with minor chipping at top of spine and at upper rear hinge, and short splits (about 1"-1.5") at lower hinges]. The Pasternak classic of a doctor-poet's travails during and after the Russian Revolution, memorably filmed by David Lean in 1965. After Soviet censors refused to permit the novel's publication in the U.S.S.R., a smuggled copy of the manuscript served as the basis for the first publication, an Italian translation issued in Milan in November 1957; the American edition was published in July 1958 (this second printing is from August). ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.****.

Hardcover. Condition: USED_VERYGOOD. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket by John Woodcock (illustrator). 1st Edition. First published in Milan in 1957, and in the UK in September 1958, this is a tenth impression of December 1958, a tribute to the book's popularity. Not price clipped (21s),no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 510pp. Due to its critical stance on the October Revolution 'Doctor Zhivago' was refused publication in the USSR. At the instigation of Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, the manuscript was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year, an event which both humiliated and enraged the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The novel was made into a film starring Julie Christie and Omar Sharrif, by David Lean in 1965, and since then has twice been adapted for television, most recently as a miniseries for Russian TV in 2006. Scarce in this early impression.
